DiSC® and Teams

Posted by William Harshman on

Using the DiSC® behavioral assessment within a team setting can significantly enhance team dynamics, communication, and overall performance.  Here’s how DiSC® can be effectively used to understand and manage team behavior:

How DiSC® Benefits Teams

  1. Understanding Individual Contributions:
    • Individual Profiles:  Each team member completes a DiSC® assessment to identify their primary behavioral style.  This helps in understanding each person’s strengths, weaknesses, and preferred ways of working.
    • Role Alignment:  Align team members’ roles with their DiSC® profiles to ensure they are in positions that leverage their natural tendencies and strengths.
  2. Enhancing Communication:
    • Communication Styles:  DiSC® helps team members understand each other’s communication styles.  For example, someone with a high Dominance (D) style might be direct and decisive, while someone with high Steadiness (S) might be more reserved and supportive.
    • Adjusting Communication:  Team members can learn to adjust their communication to better match the styles of their colleagues, leading to fewer misunderstandings and more effective interactions.
  3. Building Stronger Relationships:
    • Empathy and Understanding:  By understanding the DiSC® profiles of their colleagues, team members can develop greater empathy and appreciation for different working styles.
    • Conflict Resolution:  DiSC® provides insights into potential sources of conflict based on behavioral differences and offers strategies for resolving them.
  4. Improving Team Dynamics:
    • Balanced Teams:  Use DiSC® profiles to create balanced teams with a mix of behavioral styles.  This diversity can enhance problem-solving and creativity.
    • Team Building:  Conduct team-building exercises that leverage DiSC® insights to strengthen relationships and improve teamwork.

Practical Steps for Using DiSC in Teams

  1. Conduct DiSC Assessments:
    • Have each team member complete a DiSC® assessment to identify their behavioral style.
  2. Share and Discuss Results:
    • Facilitate a session where team members share their DiSC® profiles.  Discuss what each style means and how it manifests in the workplace.
  3. Create a Team Profile:
    • Develop a composite profile of the team that highlights the distribution of DiSC® styles.  Identify strengths, potential gaps, and areas for improvement.
  4. Tailor Communication and Collaboration:
    • Provide training on how to adjust communication and collaboration based on DiSC® styles.  For example, a high Dominance (D) individual might learn to be more patient with a high Steadiness (S) colleague.
  5. Develop Action Plans:
    • Create action plans for improving team dynamics based on DiSC® insights.  This might include setting goals for better communication, delegating tasks according to strengths, or addressing specific areas of conflict.
  6. Monitor and Adjust:
    • Regularly review the effectiveness of using DiSC® within the team.  Adjust strategies as needed to continue improving team performance and dynamics.

Case Example:  DiSC® in Action

Imagine a marketing team consisting of diverse DiSC® profiles:

·         Dominance (D):  The team leader is high in Dominance, providing direction and driving the team towards goals.

·         Influence (i):  Two team members with high Influence bring creativity and enthusiasm, generating innovative ideas and maintaining high energy levels.

·         Steadiness (S):  A couple of team members with high Steadiness ensure stability and support, helping to manage the workload and maintain harmony.

·         Conscientiousness (C):  Another member with high Conscientiousness ensures attention to detail and adherence to processes, producing high-quality work.

Using DiSC®, the team leader can:

  1. Assign Roles:  Assign tasks that play to each member’s strengths.  For example, the high Conscientiousness member might handle quality control, while the high Influence members focus on brainstorming and client interactions.
  2. Facilitate Communication:  Understand how each member prefers to communicate and adjust accordingly.  The leader might provide more detailed instructions to the high Conscientiousness member and more autonomy to the high Dominance member.
  3. Resolve Conflicts:  Use DiSC® insights to mediate conflicts.  For example, understanding that a disagreement between a high Dominance and a high Steadiness member might stem from different working paces and expectations.
  4. Encourage Collaboration:  Promote collaboration by highlighting the value of each DiSC® style and how they complement one another.  Encourage the team to leverage these differences to enhance creativity and problem-solving.

Summary

Using the DiSC® assessment in teams can greatly enhance understanding, communication, and collaboration.  By recognizing and valuing the diverse behavioral styles within a team, leaders can create a more cohesive, productive, and harmonious work environment.  Regularly integrating DiSC® insights into team practices can lead to sustained improvements in team dynamics and overall performance.
